Facility Management and Programming – SASM 6480 (3 Credits)
As a director or manager of a comprehensive sport facility, you will be responsible for overall programming, operation, maintenance, and improvement of physical plant assets that are among the most heavily used within your community. You will be expected to interact with community leaders, teachers, recreation leaders, sport coaches, parents, citizen-taxpayers, and students on a regular basis. Each group will have different needs, interests, and expectations, but all will hold a common expectation for access to clean and well-maintained facilities, and a rapid and efficient response to their requests.
This course focuses on the theory and practice of planning and managing facilities and athletic events in interscholastic athletics. Upon completion of the course, participants will understand the complexities involved in managing various types of athletic facilities and in the planning, production, and evaluation of athletic events. Topics covered in this course include the planning and design of athletic facilities, the management of athletic facilities, housekeeping and maintenance, concessions and merchandise operations, and event planning and production.
Your planning and administrative skills will play a major role in your ability to respond effectively and to make decisions or set priorities. To achieve high-level satisfaction, you will need to assess program effectiveness, participant opinions, facility and equipment conditions, and usage patterns on a regular basis.
