Authorities from D.C. Public Schools (DCPS), the public education system of the nation's capital, have announced that Marcus Ellis will soon step down as the district's athletic director, reports the Washington Post.
While no official reason has been given, the news source suggests that Ellis is resigning because he does not fit "in the plans of D.C. School Chancellor Kaya Henderson," who recently won confirmation for her post after holding it on an interim basis for the past nine months.
Since he took over as DCPS athletic director in August 2009, one of Ellis' most important goals was responding to allegations of Title IX violations by expanding opportunities for girls in the school district. The first step of this initiative was to conduct a poll of female students at seven schools this spring; Ellis planned to survey the remaining schools in the district this fall.
Ellis also reshaped the district's eligibility rules, removing a guideline that allowed students to complete their four seasons of athletic eligibility over the course of five years.
According to its website, DCPS serves roughly 45,000 students and employs more than 4,000 teachers and education administrators.
