According to the official sporting website of Stevenson University, Gary Stewart has been appointed to the position of Head Men's Basketball Coach.
Stewart brings over 25 years of experience to his new position, having served as a head coach at each NCAA level. Formerly Division One coach at University of California Davis from 2003 until earlier this year, Stewart achieved the honor of his 200th career victory in an 85-74 win over Cal State Fullerton in 2009.
"I am very excited about having him come on board," said Stevenson University director of athletics Brett Adams. "It was humbling to see so many top caliber candidates from over 200 qualified applicants that we had for this position. I think this will be a great triumph for Stevenson University and Division III basketball."
Stewart graduated from La Verne in 1984 with a degree in physical education. He began his career as a graduate assistant at Long Beach State from 1984 until 1986. He served as head coach of his alma mater from 1987 until 1995, where the team went from last place to first in just three years.
Students seeking to coach at collegiate level may wish to consider a coaching degree.
